Hiring a trainer is one of the few purchases where the wrong choice costs you more than money. A bad one wastes a year and can injure you. A good one changes how you move for the rest of your life. The problem is that almost nothing visible from the outside tells you which is which.
Certifications that actually mean something
In India the certification landscape is genuinely confusing, because anyone can print a certificate. A few names carry real assessment behind them and are worth looking for: ACE, ACSM, NASM, K11 and REPs India. A weekend course with no practical exam is not in the same category, however impressive the logo looks.
Ask to see the certificate. A qualified trainer will send it without hesitation — they paid for it and they are proud of it. Hesitation is the answer.
Questions worth asking in the first conversation
- What is your experience with someone at my level, with my goal?
- What does a typical week of programming look like for me?
- How do you track progress, and what will you show me at week eight?
- Have you worked with anyone with my injury history?
- What happens if I need to pause or travel?
You are listening for specifics. A trainer who answers with a real structure has thought about programming. A trainer who answers with motivation talk has not.
Red flags people ignore
- Guaranteed results in a fixed number of weeks. Bodies do not work on schedules.
- Selling supplements as part of the coaching package.
- No interest in your injury history, medication or sleep.
- Pressure to pay for six months up front before a single session.
- The same programme visibly given to every client on their feed.
Pay for one session before you pay for twenty
The single most useful thing you can do is book one session first. Thirty minutes of watching someone coach tells you more than any amount of scrolling. Do they correct your form or count reps? Do they explain why, or just what? Do they watch you, or their phone?
Any trainer confident in their coaching will happily take a first session. The reluctance to sell one is itself the signal.
